Description
WSET® Level 1 qualification is a beginner level introduction to wine suitable for those starting a wine career or pursuing an interest in wine. You’ll explore the main types and styles of wine through sight, smell, and taste, while also gaining the basic skills to describe wines accurately, and make food and wine pairings. Upon successful completion you will receive a WSET certificate and lapel pin.
Regular access and participation in the course online activities is essential for this mode of study.
The course will be based around a four-week, five module online learning programme with educator support available for this time. The course modules should be followed in sequential order during this 4-week window. The course material should take about six hours in total to complete, plus revision time.
Exams are in-person and are scheduled at the end of the 4-week program.

- Module 3: Grape varieties and wines
- Module 4: Storage and service of wines
- Module 5: Revision
What to Expect:
- There is no prior knowledge needed, however, students should read the WSET Level 1 Award in Wine Specification to have an understanding of expectations.
- Five modules to be completed sequentially at the student’s own pace within a 4-week period.
- Access to a WSET Certified Educator for questions and support during the 4-week period.
- Quizzes and other study activities included in the online classroom.
- A list of wines to taste during the course.
- This course ends with an in-person assessment, a closed-book exam of 30 multiple choice questions. Wine Lab does not offer free re-sits for online courses. Re-sits are subject to a fee of 50€
The WSET Level 1 Award in Wines is intended for people who have little or no prior knowledge of wines. It is designed to provide a sound but simple introduction to wines. The qualification will assist those who need a basic familiarity with the main types and styles of wines, for example people who work with wines as part of a larger beverage portfolio in the retail and hospitality sectors.
Successful candidates will be able to know the key stages in grape growing and winemaking, list the principal types and styles of wine, state the key characteristics of wines made from the principal grape varieties as well as other examples of wines, and know the key principles involved in the storage and service of wine. They will consequently be in a position to answer customer queries and provide recommendations for the service of wine.
*Online candidates are not eligible for free tasting glasses or free re-sits. Students my re-sit as many times as they would like for a fee if they are unsuccessful on their exam.
